TWO-PIECE (2PC) WHEEL consists of two parts: wheel centre and barrel. The two parts get joined together with hardware (rivets around the wheel centre). The two parts can be finished in different colors and finishes.
THREE-PIECE (3PC) WHEEL consists of three parts: wheel centre, outer (lip), and inner. The three parts get joined together with hardware (rivets around the wheel centre). The seam between the outer and inner gets sealed with silicon to make the wheel airtight. All three parts can be finished in different colors and finishes.
A two-piece wheel is a good option if you don't want to reseal the wheels every once in a while. However, the lip size on a two-piece wheel barrel is fixed and the width of the barrel is limited to 12 inches wide or narrower.
PROS:
- Less expensive but it has the look of a three-piece wheel
- It doesn't require silicon to seal the barrel seam, less maintenance
- Barrel can be replaced if damaged
CONS:
- Max barrel width is 12J or less
- Lip size is limited
- Limited lowest offset (~ -50mm)
A three-piece wheel holds a special place in car enthusiasts' hearts as it is the OG form of a modular wheel. It offers the most customization and freedom to mix and match inner and outer to create different wheel sizes, profiles, dish depths, etc.
PROS:
- Holy grail of wheel enthusiasts
- Mix and match inners and outers to create different fitment
- Lip size and dish depth depend on the selection of parts
- Can create wheels as wide as 16 inches
- No limit on how low the offset can be
- Can replace just one part if damaged
CONS:
- Most expensive option
- Wheel requires maintenance such as resealing once in a while
